BRENTACOL
Climbing and Riding in New England and Beyond

Flanders Fields

Ride leaves from: Parking Rijselsepoort

I created this route for a vacation to Belgium in 2017. It starts from a parking lot south of Ypres with plentiful and free parking (at least it was when I did it). From there the route takes you though Flanders where you'll see fields full of gravestones and ride on the so-called plug streets. There are two main events on this ride: first, the steep and cobbled Kemmelberg—this ride takes it from the east, but you're of course welcome to turn around and go back up the harder west side as well; second, a while after you ride through Popperinge, you will pass the St.Sixtus trappist monastery that brews the prized Westvleteren beers. I recommend the lower-alcohol green cap version.
