The hills along the southern side of Mackinac Island used to terrify me as a child, when my family would bring our bikes on trips there. For a long time I thought that the only way to get up to the interior was to either walk your bike (which still seemed daunting) or ride all the way to the opposite side of the island and ride up British Landing Road. When I finally realized that I could power my way up these hills, it was a pretty amazing feeling of accomplishment. Looking at them now, I'm somewhat surprised that they're as hard as they are, given how easy some of the other hills are that I thought were "hard" as a child.
