Mauna Kea (from Saddle Road)

Mauna Kea is, almost without a doubt, the hardest climb included in this database (and will be until someone paves a road to the top of Everest). This climb scores higher than the maniacal scanuppia, but that isn't even the whole story. To get to this climb and to really do it, you would start from sea level, gaining another 6000 feet before you even get to this final 24 KM. And then, there's the fact that all of these mile included in this map are gained from 6500 to 13700 feet. If we consider the fact that the final 3 miles of Mount Lemmon at 7-8% (at 8000-9000 ft) feels like climbing Okemo or Ascutney (about 11% at sea level), the 9.3% at the top of Mauna Kea might feel like climbing at a sustained 15% or so. Yikes. It is, however, possible (scroll to botom for Doug's report on Mauna Kea).
